Texas A&M

I went to college at Texas A&M. Whoop! And one of the biggest reasons I wanted to go there was to experience big-time college sports, especially college football. Game day in Aggieland does not disappoint.

If you are headed south on Highway 6 toward College Station, there is a good chance you will pass the Aggie Barn in Reagan on your way down. This is a great photo op!

Get to town Friday night so that you can attend Midnight Yell at Kyle Field to get ready for the big game the next day. Midnight Yell regularly has crowds of 25,000.

Before the game, take some time to walk around campus. I always enjoy the Academic Building and you have to see the Aggie Ring in front of the Association of Former Students. Also, be sure to make a visit to the Bonfire Memorial.

Don’t ever pass up an opportunity to take a photo with Miss Reveille, the First Lady of Aggieland and A&M’s official mascot.

Catch the Team Spirit Walk as the football team makes its way to Kyle Field and then the Corps of Cadets Step-Off as the Corps marches from the Quad to Kyle Field.

Head in to Kyle Field, the home of Aggie football since 1905. Kyle Field has a seating capacity of more than 100,000 and is the Home of the 12th Man. The student section stands the entire game to cheer on the team.

Make sure to stay at your seat for halftime to see the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band perform its precision military marching formations and Block T.

Follow along with the Yell Leaders and fans to do the yells and sway back and forth to The Aggie Way Hymn.

If you don’t have a parking pass and need a ride to or from the game, check out the Get to the Grid shuttle.

For football games later in the season, you might get lucky and be able to attend a basketball game the same weekend at Reed Arena. I was in the Reed Rowdies as a student and the basketball games are lots of fun, too.

The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum is also on the A&M campus and worth touring while you’re in town. There are many artifacts from Bush’s time in office and exhibits about his life through the years.

For all your Aggie gear and souvenirs, I recommend the C.C. Creations Warehouse, which has a huge selection of merchandise and often good deals.

My favorite places to go after you’ve worked up an appetite are tried-and-true classics: Freebirds for burritos, the Dixie Chicken on Northgate, Fuego for tacos and Double Dave’s for pizza rolls. Where are you favorite places to go in College Station?

Check out more fun places to visit in Texas: Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, South Padre Island, Fredericksburg and Waco.
